Freebie of the Week

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

You might already know that artists can sell their music at amazingtunes.com and receive 70% of the profits, but did you know that they can give their music away for free too?

Here at Amazing Radio, we like to celebrate these charitable acts by bringing one of the free downloads from amazingtunes.com, to you!

This week’s highlighted ‘Freebie’ is the indie pop floor filler One is Enough by Luna Park Rescue.

Luna Park Rescue

Luna Park Rescue

A staple of the Amazing Radio airwaves, Luna Park Rescue have embarked on giving a load of their music away for free, including this week’s Freebie of the Week. The band, who currently split their time between Manchester and London, wrote One is Enough in response to the demand from the music industry for ‘another Ground Floor Power‘; the track known as the band’s breakthrough record.

Tune into The Afternoon Show from 3pm today to hear Luna Park Rescue talk about free music and more with presenter Kyle Wilkinson, only on Amazing Radio.

Feargal Sharkey and David Hepworth pay a visit

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Join Trevor Dann this afternoon at 1pm for It’s AmazingAmazing Radio’s epic talk show. What better way to fill your Wednesday lunchtime?

It’s fair to say that Trevor’s got an insanely good panel with him this week, with another appearance from the writer and broadcaster David Hepworth, alongside an It’s Amazing debut from the former Undertones singer and current Chief Executive of UK Music, Feargal Sharkey.

Amongst all the anecdotes and music-related advice, they’ll be examining the work of Worthing quartet Sandweaver, the Yorkshire-tinged powerpop of James Owen Fender and the off-kilter harmonies of Crowns on the Rats Orchestra, so you can expect plenty of lively discussion over the course of the programme.

Click here to see the full list of songs up for examination on this week’s episode of It’s Amazing. Listen through them, pick your favourite and see if it matches the panel’s choice at the end of the show.

Catch It’s Amazing with Trevor Dann, David Hepworth and Feargal Sharkey, this afternoon from 1pm on Amazing Radio.

The Ship takes on the K-Train

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Each week Amazing Radio‘s resident rock and roll man Kevin ‘K-Train’ Read receives a hypothetical glove slap from a would be challenger.

This challenge is to see if the K-Train can ‘out rock’ their most hardcore experiences, be it onstage, in an audience, or even on a ferry!

This week’s challenger is Gav Gates, the black drum skinning drummer of Boy Jumps Ship, who’ll be live in session on The Afternoon Show this Friday. Gav couldn’t resist laying down the rock and roll gauntlet to Kev, having heard many a rumour about the Operations Manager’s rock and roll credentials.

Gav Gates - not to be confused with Gareth...

Drummer Gav’s been playing with Boy Jumps Ship for over a year now, giving him the opportunity to tour his way across the UK and mainland Europe whilst drummer K-Train’s performed an impromptu set to seasick passengers on a ferry to Amsterdam so we’re predicting a very close war is ready to rage this afternoon!

If you want to see who wins the rock and roll title this afternoon, make sure you tune into The Afternoon Show from 3pm today, on Amazing Radio.

Matchmaker

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Each week The Afternoon Show goes all Cilla Black and attempts to musically Matchmake a listener with a ‘new music love’.

All you music hungry listeners need to do is tell us your three favourite artists (from past, present or both) and we’ll hunt through the vaults of amazingtunes.com and find you a new music act to romance.

On last week’s Matchmaker special, presenter Kyle Wilkinson decided he was jealous of our happy Matchmaker participants and wanted the Matchmaker treatment for himself. He challenged Producer Frankie to scour the new music site to find him the love of his musical life.

A lovelorn Kyle Wilkinson

Kyle gave ‘New Music Cupid’ Producer Frankie the band names Faithless, The Count and Sinden and Subfocus and told her to seek him out some ‘bangin’ beats.’

Producer Frankie searched all over amazingtunes.com and finally tripped the beat fantastic when she came across the track Round the Clock by Willpower Productions, also featuring the vocal talents Mikill Pane and Tiger Lily. Frankie says that she’s picked it because it sounds like a cross between ‘that Day and Night track by Kid Cudi and Katy on a Mission by Katy B.’

We hope you heart it Kyle!

Find out if Kyle falls in musical love by tuning into The Afternoon Show, today from 3pm, on Amazing Radio.

Fortnight of Colour

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Every Sunday, Charlie Ashcroft counts down the Amazing Radio Chart. Here he gives us the lowdown on this week’s movers and shakers from amazingtunes.com.

Having climbed dramatically to Number 1 last week, Films of Colour have now made it two weeks at the top of the Amazing Radio Chart.

Films of Colour

Ahead of the band’s gig at 93 Feet East in London this coming Friday, Actions has fought off the resurgent momentum of  Charly Coombes & The New Breed and the relentless rise of Donk Azure to complete a triumphant fortnight at the summit.

With Tantrums, Julia & The Doogans and Zell Am See all falling slightly this week, congratulations must be thrown the way of Dry The River, Bim and Capitals, who’ve made great inroads inside the Top 10.

New Entry-wise, we say hello again to Stratford-upon-Avon troupe Cadets, who’ve followed up their #3 hit from July (You Are The Thunder) to have the Chart’s highest newbie this week at Number 15, in the form of Living The Low-Life. They’re closely followed by Dundee’s Colour-Coded, whose track Smile Now, Cry Later is straight in at 16 and San Diego beatniks Inspired Flight, whose Wu-Tang-featuring, slow-burning anthem We All Want To Fly soars in at 19.

Website of the Week

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Each week The Afternoon Show crowns a different website the accolade of Website of the Week. This week the title goes to Echoes and Dust, an independent music blog founded by editor Dan Salter.

In this blog Dan tells us about Echoes and Dust, and how the site began.

Echoes And Dust came to life on a wet Wednesday evening back in 2007 when a group of like minded Indie geeks sat in Islington’s Mucky Pup (best jukebox in London!) harping on that there weren’t enough websites covering the particular dark corner of Indiedom that we liked to frequent. At that point the thought occurred to us that rather than moaning about it why didn’t we get off our collective backsides and do something about it? And Thus, the website was born.
Since then we have reviewed some several hundred albums, gigs and associated bits and bobs, and hopefully become a go-to place for a hardy handful of music enthusiast. We don’t get the sort of site visit numbers that will keep NME awake at night but we get by! We’re pretty much a one man operation, although I can occasionally press gang one of my associates to lend a hand, so we can never cover as much as we’d like to. (If anyone out there wants to contribute, please feel free to get in touch!)
Recently we’ve also moved in to the physical world under the banner of Sunkan Dymonds putting on a series of gigs featuring unsigned bands and donating all money received to charity. So far we have supported Macmillan and Action Aid and have further gigs coming up on October 23rd as part of Oxfam’s Oxjam event and the December 18th for Shelter.

Tune into The Afternoon Show on Amazing Radio from 3pm today to hear Kyle Wilkinson and Producer Frankie award Echoes and Dust the Website of the Week crown.

Region of the Week roundup

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Every week The Afternoon Show explore a different music scene. This week they’ve been exploring the historic region of Manchester, well renowned for rave and lad rock records.

Ey ‘up everyone, Producer Frankie here!

This week we’ve been making ourselves busy roaming around the Manchester musical landscape, and we could not have done it without our wonderful guides.

We kicked off Monday by chatting to Designer Mag‘s Alex McCann. Designer Mag reviews gigs at Manchester’s finest venues including Manchester Roadhouse, Night & Day, Moho Live, Satan’s Hollow and many more. We also chatted to brand new songwriter’s union Northern Song Collective on Wednesday.

Thursday saw us delve deeper into Manchester’s musical heritage as we spoke to Steve Jones of the Factory Club, a newly refurbished centre of cool that once played host to the infamous Factory Records label.

We also spoke to three fantastic Manchester based acts this week, who treated us to both their music and their Manchester knowledge.

On Tuesday we spoke to the fabulous Jane Parker, the enigmatic lady behind Ernest + Tom, an act that’s never failed to catch my ear when blasting out on the Amazing Radio airwaves. Check out her video for top track Non Stop Orbit below.

On Wednesday we spoke to guitarist Phil Higgins from Violet Youth and today we’ll be rounding up the week with Amazing Breakfast‘s Artist of the Week Luna Park Rescue.
