It's working

The transfer to the new playout system went fine at 1000 this morning.  So now we got scrolling text for every song, control over the schedule, better audio quality and a louder signal.  Brill.  Well done Ian and Bill for incredible hard work and a flawless changeover.

Then this morning I did an interview with a pan-European radio station who want to link up regularly.  Amazing Radio Europe, now that’s an idea…

  1. Is it possible to make scrolling name of song and artist available on internet broadcast ?

Hi Aleksandrs, it’s on its way! (We couldn’t do some bits of it until the playout server went live yesterday). The listings should be on this site within the hour. We’ve also been developing a page listing all tracks played going back in time, including date and exact time. We’ll soon be adding new search functionality so you can search by day, date, artist, title, genre …. (I could go on). Could be pretty cool. PC

ps 2030 Friday 26th – Doing the listings is taking longer than we thought, but Jon is working late on it (thanks Jon), so we should be there soon. PC

Great radio station Paul, I spread the word. I wonder if anyone outside the UK can upload their music onto your site. We need something like ‘Amazing’ to showcase the best talent. Thanks for the concept Paul.

Hi Diana, Thanks very much – yes, artists anywhere in the world can use amazing. And thousands already do – we’ve got users everywhere, with particular strengths in North America and mainland Europe. Look forward to hearing your stuff. PC

  5. By the way… Here is one idea … it would be interesting to view statistics of AR plays on Artist_stats page …

Yes, that’s coming. We’re also planning an iPhone App that will show you your Radio play stats, recommendations, downloads and other amazingtunes.com stats. And another service that’ll email or text you when your tunes are about to be broadcast, to let you know in advance. (More ideas very welcome!). PC

  7. Hi Paul, If a song is quite long (4mins +) will it have less chance of being aired?

Hey James, The very idea! We don’t care how long a tune is, just so long as it’s good. I think being able to play very long tracks that nobody else would play should be one of the many differences of Amazing Radio. Feel free! PC

Hi – this is a very very good concept and I wish you a lot of luck. I am curious why the DAB signal says stereo, but you are playing mono material. Hopefully that will change.

Andrew – as you know, we’ve emailed each other about this. We’re a bit puzzled, but are checking there’s nothing wrong at our end. If there is, we’ll fix it! PC

I’m afraid this is going to sound quite negative. I am writing this because I genuinely want Amazing Radio to be a success regardless of whether or not any my songs make the playlist. Over the past 4 weeks, I have been an avid listener of Amazing Radio, but for the last couple of days I am frequently switching off or changing stations. It appears that some songs are constantly repeated, some within an hour of their last play. I am not alone in this, as some friends and family have also made similar comments.
Another thing that is sadly making me reach for the off button is that some artists seem to have a number of songs on the playlist; again these are repeated quite frequently. I remember one of your earlier announcements stated ‘variety was the key’. I have to agree with this. I haven’t liked everything I have heard on Amazing Radio but I had the confidence to keep listening, as I knew something totally different was coming next. I am sorry that I’m whinging and I do appreciate the amount of time and effort you have put into the project so far, but I do want Amazing Radio to become a success. I sincerely hope it does.

Hi Lee, I’ve emailed you direct about this and also blogged about the problem you raised (‘Totally Random. Unfortunately’). You’re dead right, and it was pissing me off over the weekend too. Both problems were caused by the same thing, the new playout software system not doing what it was supposed to. We’ve fixed the problem this morning and are also adding another 100 songs today, so the variety will return.
These are supposed to be test transmissions i.e. they’re designed to identify problems – but it’s still very annoying when problems do occur!
Thanks for the supportive comments too, I hope we’ll get to the right place where we merit them, and deserve to succeed. PC

Really love the idea of your radio station but the sound quality lets you down.
I bet the bands did the best they could to get the sound they wanted, only to have it ruined by DAB. But don’t worry – all music radio on DAB sounds as crap as this…

Aha! what you need to do is buy lots of lovely original, CD quality, uncompressed songs from amazingtunes.com ! Then the DAB quality won’t be so annoying! (Sorry you don’t like the sound quality – we have the best bandwidth money can buy … unless you’re the BBC – and DAB is the way of the future, according to the Digital Britain white paper). PC
