Epic Edinburgh Comedy Blogstravaganza! (Part 1)

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

It’s that time of year again, and if, like us you’re a fan of live comedy you’ll be itching to head north with all the funniest people from the UK and beyond to set up camp in one of our loveliest cities for some giggles and a good time. That’s right – it’s time for the Edinburgh Fringe once again!

As we’ve spoken to so many lovely comedians in the last year, Team Amazing Breakfast thought we’d give you a guide to what all our favourite funny people are up to in the festival this year. Not wanting to play favourites, we’ll do it in chronological order, naturally – so here, in the order we’ve spoken to them over the last year, is what some of our favourite folks are up to in Edinburgh this August.

Tony Jameson

Tony Jameson teams up with Dan Wright to bring you the Social Anxiety Network – an hour of stand up based on – you guessed it – social anxieties. Full details here.

Ben Van Der Velde & Matt Richardson

Ben Van Der Velde and Matt Richardson have teamed up to bring you Attention Deficit Let’s Go Ride Bikes! – ‘an hour of stand-up comedy involving good cheer, bad luck and inappropriate nosebleeds’. As you do. Full details here.

Jim Campbell & Luke Benson

We caught up with Jim Campbell just after his last performance at Edinburgh last year, see how he gets on this year at the Comedy Reserve alongside Luke Benson, Julian Dean and Joe Lycett. Full details here.

Naz Osmanoglu

The man we’ve spoken to with the most difficult to pronounce name has to be Naz Osmanoglu who’ll be doing not one but TWO shows – his own solo effort 1000% Awesome and one with his sketch group WitTank so go see both and make him a happy man.

Jeff Leach

We spoke to the very funny Jeff Leach ahead of his compering and curating comedy events at Oxjam Kilburn last year, his show A Leach On Society promises ‘an unrelenting and gratuitous insight into his sordid private life‘ – so don’t say we didn’t warn you. Full details here.

The end to another week is always bittersweet. We’re sad to say goodbye to Up and Down by Chad Valley as our Track of the Week and just as sad to bid farewell to Plant Plants as out artist of the week, but we’ve got a bit of Facebook Friday action for you – we’re talking romance and proposals, in honour of Team Amazing Breakfast’s favourite associate member, Charlie Ashcroft popping the question to his lovely lady, we thought we’d get a few of your awesome proposal stories. If that’s not enough to wash away those blues, we’ve also got an interview with Slow Club! Best Friday ever?

Thursday 28th July

matt green

In addition to another great tune from Plant Plants and another opportunity to shake your booty to Up and Down by Chad Valley, we’re also chatting to another excellent comedian – this week we’re speaking to the very charming Matt Green. Matt also introduced Team Amazing Breakfast to some awesome new music in the form of Laish what a great guy! You can tell him how awesome you think he is on Twitter.

Wednesday 27th July

plant plants

Every Wednesday we speak to our Artist of the Week, and today it’s the turn of Howie from the very awesome Plant Plants – he gave us all the details on how they’re working with one of the guys from Simian Mobile Disco and life in the Plant Plants garden. We’ve also got another spin of Up and Down our Track of the Week from Chad Valley!

Tuesday 26th July

chad valley

Another day, another awesome musical guest! As well as more great tunes from Chad Valley, as well as more from Plant Plants, and as well as the usual Twitter Tuesday shenanigans, we’ve got great company throughout the week this week on Amazing Breakfast – today is the turn of the wonderful Peggy Sue – formerly Peggy Sue and the Pirates, and we thought asking them the same mundane questions about their new album as everyone else…but there’s no fun in that, is there? Georgie has an alternative approach up her sleeve…

Monday 25th July

chad valley

Georgie’s back from Secret Garden Party…with a wheelbarrow full of interviews in tow! Bit of Alpines for you this morning? A sprig of Joana & the Wolf, perhaps? To go with your usual assortment of new music in the form of a new Track of the Week Chad Valley and a new Artist of the Week  in the form of Plant Plants, of course. Dig in.

Friday 22nd July

treefight

It’s the end of the week, so that means it’s time to say goodbye to our fantastic Track of the Week – Time Stretcher by Treefight For Sunlight and also to our equally fantastic Artist of the Week Spokes hopefully we’ll find a way of squeezing both of them into the shows again soon though! As it’s Friday that also means Facebook Friday and this week we wanted to hear all about your tiny moments of TV superstardom – were you ‘that guy’ who was interviewed, outraged outside a football stadium? Been an extra or had an awesome cameo in something? Were you spotted in the crowd on the Glasto coverage? We want to know! Head over to our Facebook Page and we’ll relate the tale of your glorious TV debut to the nation!

Thursday 21st July

richard sandling

We’ve got more from Spokes and another play of Time Stretcher by Treefight For Sunlight and, of course, a comedian on the show today! This week we caught up with Richard Sandling and he told us all his love of movies, appearing in Peep Show, his Edinburgh show, and Georgie just couldn’t resist chatting to him about Essex…

Wednesday 20th July

spokes

Every Wednesday we take up the opportunity to speak to our Artist of the Week and this week it’s the turn of exceptionally lovely gent, Matt Baty, drummer from Spokes! Matt spoke to us all about how the band started out, plans for the future, and the emotional trauma of accidently chucking a tenner out in the bin. Don’t worry Matt, we’ve got another spin of Time Stretcher by Treefight For Sunlight to ease your pain.

Tuesday 19th July

step dad

In addition to another spin of Time Stretcher by Treefight For Sunlight and more from the wonderful Spokes it’s also Twitter Tuesday! This week we’re talking all about frivolous purchases – those things you’ve bought that you wanted…but didn’t really need…have you splurged on an iPad recently? Is there a life-sized model of Darth Vader sitting in your living room? Do you have no more cupboard space left to house your shoe collection? Let us know!

Monday 18th July

step dad

Another day, another dollar, another set of awesome new music to showcase for you! This week we’re putting the lovely Spokes on the podium as our Artist of the Week and have an awesome new Track of the Week from Bella Union’s Treefight For Sunlight – we’re a lot in love with their song Time Stretcher and suspect you will be too!

Friday 15th July

step dad

It’s the final show of the week, and that means the final play for our awesome Track of the Week by Stepdad and Beautiful One – the final track from Beat Radio which Brian mentioned to us in Wednesday’s interview! This and a bit of Facebook Friday action should set you up right for the weekend. This week we’re thinking about bands. Everyone’s had a little fantasy of being in a band, deep down. If you could be in a band – any band, past or present – who would it be? Ever wished you were a Beatle? Would you have been a Spice Girl? Or would you rather have rocked out with Metallica? Let us know!

Thursday 14th July

danny wallace

Thursdays are funny, and this week we had a lovely visit from writer, presenter, comedian and general polymath, Danny Wallace. DANNY WALLACE! He gave us the skinny on his new book More Awkward Situations For Men and…well, we could say more, but that would be spoiling it. As if that wasn’t enough, we’ve got another track from Artist of the Week Beat Radio and another play of My Leather, My Fur, My Nails by Stepdad as well. You don’t have to be Danny Wallace to say YES to that!

Wednesday 13th July

step dad

We’ve got another play of our fantastic Track of the Week from Stepdad and we’re also speaking to the exceptionally charming Brian, mastermind of our marvellous Artist of the Week Beat Radio. Brian gave us a potted history of the band, what they’re up to at the moment, the story behind their brilliant track Everything Follows and we also couldn’t resist asking him what it was like being on the New York Scene, of course!

Tuesday 12th July

step dad

Ah, the internet. Full of great, informative things, full of pretty horrific things, full of cat pictures, and full of terrifically random blogs, tumblrs, and websites, devoted to incredibly specific and incredibly silly things. Maybe you’ve seen Kim Jong Il Looking At Things? or perhaps Glum Councillors? Though Team Amazing Breakfast aren’t entirely sure what possesses people to start them, we’re glad they exist. So, for Twitter Tuesday we want to know which brilliantly random blogs you’ve come across! Tweet us your favourites. All this and more from Beat Radio and another spin of My Leather, My Fur, My Nails by Stepdad too.

Monday 11th July

beat radio

A bit of transatlantic awesomeness with your cornflakes? Oh, go on then, just a sprinkle, though. It may have been a week since American Independence Day, but we seem to still be just a bit infatuated with all things American. Both our new Artist of the Week and our Track of the Week have come to us from across the pond, and we’ve got no complaints!

Our Track of the Week is some synthy-pop sunshine music from Stepdad with their killer tune My Leather, My Fur, My Nails and Artist of the Week is some laidback brilliance from Beat Radio – you might have heard us playing Everything Follows – tune in for more!

Friday 8th July

kill van kulls

Georgie is away, and the legend that is Charlie Ashcroft is othewise engaged, Colin and Matt are still wreaking havoc across the afternoon…who ya gonna call? It’s time to go with Plan D. Or Plan DC, as it’s actually known. Regular listeners may know DC, or Producer Dani as the silent partner of Team Amazing Breakfast, well, it’s silence no more. With the final track from Artist of the Week Among Brothers another spin of Charlie’s favourites the Kill Van Kulls and maybe a few choices of her own. For one day only, DC takes control. Be nice though, it’s her birthday.

Thursday 7th July

suzy bennett

Georgie’s still croaky, so Charlie’s still classy behind the wheel of the Amazing Breakfast car, steering it straight towards the chequered flag of awesome radio. We’ve got more from Among Brothers and another spin of our Track of the Week from the Kill Van Kulls and keeping in the grand Amazing Breakfast tradition of having wonderful comedians on the show, we drafted in Suzy Bennett to keep Charlie company. Suzy told us all about coming to London from Devon, and about her plans for Edinburgh this year. Suzy also is doing some wonderful charitable work with Race For Life – read all about it over here on her blog, and give her a digital wave on Twitter to tell her how brilliant she is.

Wednesday 6th July

among brothers

Even though Georgie is away, Charlie is on hand to take the baton and run with it for another day, and keep a steady pace with the usual Amazing Breakfast shenanigans. We’ve got another spin of Lost and Found by The Kill Van Kulls for you, and on Wednesdays we like to catch up with our Artist of the Week – today is no exception! We grabbed a few words with Alex from the utterly brilliant Among Brothers. You may have heard My Head Is A Vessel on Amazing Radio before, but either way, they’re definitely Your New Favourite Band!

Tuesday 5th July

kill van kulls

While Georgie is huddled under a duvet, we’ve still got Charlie Ashcroft on board to steer the Good Ship Amazing Breakfast in her absence! In addition to another spin of the excellent Lost and Found by the Kill Van Kulls and more from Artist of the Week Among Brothers, as we’re now in prime holiday season, we’re going to be giving out some good old fashioned travel advice, including the importance of manners, and essential items no traveller should leave at home. Now where did we leave the barometer…?

Monday 4th July

among brothers

Wow, Georgie’s sounding a bit gruff this morning…suspiciously like…Charlie Ashcroft, actually. Well, Georgie IS sounding a bit gruff – so she’s been put on strict orders by Producer Dani not to talk for the next week! As Charlie did such an exceptional job previously he’s back in the saddle, taking the reins, and ready to make the Breakfast Pony trot on for another day. We’ve got a new Artist of the Week in the form of Among Brothers whose brilliant song My Head Is A Vessel has causing a stir here on Amazing Radio, and our new Track of the Week is a triumphant return for the excellent Kill Van Kulls. We’ve played and loved Fools Wish – today we introduce Lost and Found!

Friday 1st July

andrew watts

To wrap up this week’s festivities, we’re polishing off the last of the Lemonade which BRAIDS thoughtfully brought over, and we’re all done with our exercise for the week with final play of a track from Channel Swimmer’s back catalogue, and we thought we’d bring the giggles to this morning for Facebook Friday by talking about some of the comedy signs you’ve seen on your travels. Sometimes from inspirational messages, punctuation failures, or, more often than not, language barriers – they just never fail to raise a chuckle. So if you’ve seen anything that’s as funny as this head over to our Facebook Page and let us know!

Thursday 30th June

andrew watts

The wonderfully affable Andrew Watts is our comedic guest for this week, he’s been down on his luck, (but of course, has exploited it to its fullest comedy potential) but managed to keep a good old fashioned stiff upper lip. In addition to the usual array of fantastic music, we’ve got another spin of our awesome Track of the Week by BRAIDS and another fantastic tune from Artist of the Week Channel Swimmer.

Wednesday 29th June

channel swimmer

Mat spoke to us all about the music of Channel Swimmer, doing Awesome Remixes of other bands we love like Polarsets and, of course, swimming the channel.

Tuesday 28th June

braids

It’s that time of year again. Summer fast approaching, kids loitering with intent on street corners after school as the teachers have stopped bothering with pesky things like homework, not when they’re trying to organise the inevitable chaos that is….the end of year play. We’ve all been there. We’ve worn the tights and the badly constructed papier mache. Learned the lines, sung the songs, and generally given our parents a wealth of blackmail material to wheel out in front of future partners forever. For Twitter Tuesday we want you to share with us your childhood theatrical triumphs. Were you the best tree in the wood? Did your Oliver put Olivier to shame? Let us know! All this and more from Channel Swimmer and another swig of Lemonade from BRAIDS!

Monday 27th June

channel swimmer

We love nothing more than some chilled electronic beats on a Monday morning. Thank goodness we’ve got a new Artist of the Week in the shape of Channel Swimmer to make that wish come true. So refreshing! What else is refreshing for a Monday? A cool drink of Lemonade you say? That’ll be our Track of the Week from BRAIDS sorting us out with that, then! With music like this in our ears, Team Amazing Breakfast are prepped and ready to wear our rock-star sunglasses in to the office, no matter what the sky is doing.

Obviously The Breakfast Club is right up there in our estimation, but we want to know yours, so tweet us your favourites!

Why start moshing at an acoustic stage? Tweet us with yours!

Monday 6th June

kyla

What could be better for a Monday morning than the sound of a great new single by an artist we LOVE? We’d say nothing, but that’d be a lie, a free holiday and loads of cash would probably be better, but a new track from Kyla La Grange is a pretty bloomin’ good way to start the day. We adored Walk Through Walls and we’re already adoring Been Better just as much.

Friday 6th May

beat connection

It’s Friday! Unfortunately it’s not a bank holiday this week. Gutter! To make up for it, for this week’s Facebook Friday topic we’re talking Middle-Class NIGHTMARES. Those utterly trivial problems that seem like the end of the world, when really, it’s not even a bit more than an inconvenience. Those times when you’re making dinner and you discover, to you’re horror, that you’re out of couscous. THE HORROR. So, to poke fun at the entirely minor crises in our lives, head over to our Facebook Page and tell us yours! We’ve also a track from the soundtrack to Flick from 3BobNation and the final play of Silver Screen by Beat Connection.

Thursday 5th May

Charlie asked Abigail all about the book, the future, and about picking songs for the soundtrack such as Speak To Me by Futuristic Retro Champions!

Are you a fan of a names like Casiotone For The Painfully Alone or And So I Watch You From Afar? Tweet us your suggestions!

Monday 2nd May

chaz ashcroft

After a week of the intense beats from Mark Ryan, we thought we’d soothe your troubled soul with the dulcet tones of Charlie Ashcroft introducing loads of great new music to you every day this week. In grand Amazing Breakfast tradition, he’s picked a sensational Track of the Week from Beat Connection and we’ve gone all upmarket by not having an Artist of the week, but an Author of the Week! Abigail Tarttelin has written a book called Flick which is a novel with a difference – it comes with a soundtrack of songs she’s selected from amazingtunes.com and we’re playing cuts from the soundtrack every day this week starting with the awesome Trapped In Kansas and their track Towerblock!

New week! New tunes! New…PRESENTER?! No, it’s not that Georgie’s gotten better at accents, it really is Mark Ryan you can hear coming out of your speakers. The one and only beats-master will be here all week filling in for Ms Rogers while she’s sunning herself in India, but he’ll be steering your week through all of the usual fun and games (with a darker twist, of course) with a new Artist of the Week in the shape of the 1914s whose tunes you might have heard on Mark’s own show Amazing Beats. Mark has also picked a beats-filled Track of the Week from Homework Brothers and will be introducing regular Amazing Breakfast listeners to… The Drop.

Spotlight Kid

It’s always tough to part ways with our friends, and it feels like just like that, every Friday when we have final plays of songs by the spectacularly talented Daughter and our last wonderful, epic morning hug from Spotlight Kid and their brilliant song Haunting Me. To cheer ourselves up, for Facebook Friday TeamBrekky have been basking in the warm nostalgic glow of our computer screens by watching TV theme tunes on YouTube. Thursday 21st April

James Sherwood

Sometimes songs are unintentionally funny, and then there are songs by James Sherwood. (Where the comedy is entirely intentional, naturally!) We love music, we love comedy, so of course we can’t help but love someone as good at both as James is, and we couldn’t resist getting him on the phone for a chat. We chatted all about highlights, lowlights and misleading titles for your Edinburgh show! Wednesday 20th April

Daughter

We caught up with Elena Tonra – AKA our wonderful Artist of the Week Daughter a little while ago, and she was as charming as she is talented. Sometimes life is so unfair. If she keeps penning and performing songs as beautiful as Run and new song Landfill we’ve got no choice but to forgive her though! We chatted to her about how she started out and her plans for the rest of the year. Top this off with another play of Haunting Me by Spotlight Kid, our epic Track of the Week, and it’s pretty hard to go wrong if you’re starting your day from here.

Tuesday 19th April

Daughter

Alongside more from the utterly spellbinding Daughter, we’ve got another play of our fantastic shoegazey ‘morning hug’ of a Track of the Week by the brilliant Spotlight Kid it’s called Haunting Me and we LOVE it. It’s also – of course – Twitter Tuesday and seeing as it’s spring, seeing as there are lambs and prams everywhere you turn at the moment, we can’t resist chatting about baby names! Tweet us your favourites, or ones you’ve heard that are so dreadful/baffling you need to share them! Know anyone called Annette Curtain? Fancy calling your kids Apple and Moses? Tweet us @amazingbrekky!

Our Artist of the Week You Animals sent out guitarist Stuart as their representative, and he was an all-round excellent chap! He filled us in on all things regarding their new album ‘Crimes, Creeps & Thrills’, their plans for the year, and the story behind Halfway To Heartbreak – he calls their sound ‘pop music with a dark heart’, we call it amazing, of course!

Tuesday 12th April

You Animals

This week we’re looking for suggestions for party themes, as Georgie’s brother will soon be departing for Moscow, she’s throwing him a massive bash! A suitably entertaining theme is needed, however, so Tweet us your suggestions!

Monday 11th April

You Animals

New day, new week, new Artist of the Week! The wonderful You Animals make what Stuart from the band described as ‘pop music with a dark heart’ – can’t argue with that! You might have heard both tracks from their current single What A Shame Lorraine and Halfway to Heartbreak, playing on Amazing Radio lately, and we were so much in love with them, we had to have them as Artist of the Week! We’ve also got an absolutely crackin’ new Track of the Week from unouomedude – his new single Frequency is just one of many awesome songs on his amazingtunes.com profile!

Children can be horrors, can’t they…what a dreadful bunch we all were! If you’ve got some hilarious tales, head on over to our Facebook Page and share your guilt!

Thursday 7th April

Nish Kumar

We interrupted the charming and wonderful Nish Kumar in the middle of doing the washing up. Sorry Nish! He’s our excellent comedy guest for the week, one half of Culture Show parody sketch duo The Gentlemen of Leisure and brilliant stand-up in his own right! You can tell him how brilliant you think he is on Twitter. We’ve also got more from Dimbleby & Capper and another play of our Track of the Week Lost & Found by Jukebox Collective.

Wednesday 6th April

Dimbleby & Capper

Our mega-awesome Artist of the Week Dimbleby & Capper is the alias of the lovely Laura Bettinson, and we caught a chat with her shortly after the launch of her insanely catchy single Let You Go to talk all things D&C about how the project came about, forthcoming material and it’s many extensions. Big thanks to Laura!

Tuesday 5th April

Jukebox Collective

In addition to more from Dimbleby & Capper it’s Twitter Tuesday! As Georgie prepares for her impending voyage to India, she needs some reading material to keep her brain occupied! Friday 25th March

My Tiger My Timing

It’s Friday. As a special treat we’ll let you in on a secret – our Artist of the Week for next week has inspired this week’s Facebook Friday topic with the chorus for this tune – it’s a bit favourite of TeamBrekky’s and we love singing along in the studio…but just can’t work out what those lines are! So our topic for this week is indecipherable or misheard lyrics – ever thought someone was singing something really weird in a song? Like ‘boogie wonderland’ was ‘boogie with your dad’? Let us know over at our Facebook page! We’re also bidding farewell to the marvellous Buen Chico as our Artist of the Week and the equally marvellous My Tiger My Timing with their track This Is Not The Fire but they’ll surely be back on the show soon enough!

Friday 11th March

Kyla La Grange

Friday, Friday, Friday! Hurrah! Or boo-hoo, if you consider we have to say goodbye to our Artist of the Week, Royal Treatment Plant and give Bear Driver’s track Enemy it’s final outing. Though if you head over to their profiles on amazingtunes.com and show both artists some digital love, you’ll hear more from them soon enough! More boo-hoo-ing from Team Brekky because after Pancake Madness on Tuesday, it’s now Lent – season of abstinence. Which isn’t very much fun at all. We provide a public service here on Amazing Breakfast, though. In order to remind you of why you’re giving things up and to give you inspiration to keep at it, this week’s Facebook Friday deals with excesses – those times when perhaps you had a bit…too much fun? No need to thank us, just head over to our Facebook Friday and share your own stories of excess! As if that wasn’t enough for you, we’ve also got an exclusive interview with rising starlet Kyla La Grange – we caught up with Kyla at the Social in London ahead of her single launch earlier this week – for a full review of that gig and more, check out Amazing Live with Rich Brant this afternoon at 1pm!

Thursday 3rd March

Loretta Maine Flowers

We had a funny lady last week in the shape of Eleanor Conway and we’ve got another this week in the shape of Pippa Evans AKA Loretta Maine! Loretta Maine is Pippa’s musical alter-ego. She’s unlucky in love, just a little bit bitter (and a lot twisted), and she’s not afraid to sing about it. Graphically. We spoke to the rather less disturbed Pippa as she was in domestic goddess mode at home, and chatted all about her various characters, gigging, TV, and the merits of not doing a run at Edinburgh. Pippa thoughtfully uploaded one of Loretta’s songs to amazingtunes.com for you to enjoy whenever you wish to hear it!

Wednesday 2nd March

Long Lost Sun

Our awesome Artist of the Week this is, of course, electropop duo Long Lost Sun, and we caught up with both Sarah and Jethro from the band and chatted all about how they came to make music together, the tailoring of the songs from Sarah’s original singer-songwriter arrangements to the synth collages they’ve become, and gearing up to performing live. Let us know!

Monday 28th February

Long Lost Sun

Not quite a brand new month yet, but still plenty of awesome new things for your ears! A brand new Track of the Week from Groove Armada’s magnificent vocalist and solo-artist in her own right, Saint Saviour. The song is called This Ain’t No Hymn and it’s bloomin’ great. We’ve also got a new Artist of the Week for you, in the form of Long Lost Sun – you might remember their fantastic tracks The Right Light and Where I Lie, which we liked so much we wanted to showcase more of their great songs, and we’ll be doing just that across the week!

Friday 25th February

The Travelling Band

We’ve got final outings for both our awesome Artist of the Week The Answering Machine and a final spin of our Track of the Week Sundial by The Travelling Band and as it’s the season of award ceremonies, we thought we’d give out some of our own awards as a part of Facebook Friday! The TeamBrekky family has expanded. Patrick Monahan

As the brilliant Tom Allen said last week, lots of comedians get into what they do because they love to talk. This week’s incredibly entertaining guest Patrick Monahan is no exception! In fact, he had so much to say, all of it brilliant, we weren’t able to squeeze it all in and still play as many great songs as usual, so if you head to our interview archive you can find the full interview for your listening pleasure. We spoke about all kinds of things to him, not least his love for Lionel Richie?! Also on today’s show – more from Mammal Club and Haight-Ashbury!

Listen to the interview again here.

Wednesday 16th February

Haight Ashbury

We caught a word with the lovely Kirsty from our Artist of the Week Haight-Ashbury to chat about the current record, new material, touring, festivals, how their brilliant swooning sound came to be, and all about the story behind Favourite Song, which certainly is a favourite of ours here on Amazing Breakfast!

Website of the Week

Monday, March 14th, 2011
Hercules Moments is a student-run music blog based in Aberdeen, Scotland. We aim to promote Aberdeen artists equally alongside household names, so if you have a flick through our archives you’ll see local bands like Indian Red Lopez and Right Hand Left alongside Klaxons, Supertramp and Weezer.
We founded the website in March 2009 as a bit of fun, but it soon grew into something that we are immensely proud of, so we’re planning a big celebration to mark our 2nd birthday! We’re holding a gig in Aberdeen’s The Tunnels on the 19th of March featuring three amazing local acts – Stanley, Min Diesel and Amber Wilson – and we hope as many people as possible will be able to come along and join the festivities!
More info on the gig can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=196849996992653

2011 Predictions: Frankie Ward

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Here at Amazing Radio we’re always looking to find you brand new and emerging talent to grace your ears and our airwaves.

Over the next couple of weeks the Amazing team will be revealing who they think you’ll be hearing more of throughout 2011. Today the new music tips come from Amazing Folk Roots Show presenter Frankie Ward.

Frankie’s first ‘one to watch’ is Sunderland based solo artist Martin Longstaff, who performs under the name of The Lake Poets:

“The music from The Lake Poets provides everything you could ever want from an acoustic musician. The songs are laden with fabulous lyrics, subtle finger plucked guitar melodies and tender vocals. Martin’s quickly starting to gain a fan base outside of the North East so I predict a tour and big opportunities for him soon. Watch his space.”

The Lake Poets

The Lake Poets

Frankie’s second pick for 2011 greatness is ‘licensed London Underground busker’ Beck Lanehart:

“I was absolutely blown away when I first heard Beck Lanehart and her song ‘The Eversholt Trees‘. Her voice is stunning in its purity and her vocal technique is impeccable. This might seem irrelevant to most, but for me hearing a voice with such a fantastic natural tone is extremely exciting.  I really hope she gets the chance to release a full LP soon – I’ll be at the front of the queue when she does.”

Could 2011 be the year of the ‘impeccable vocal technique’, we wonder?

Hear Frankie Ward present the Amazing Folk Roots Show tonight from 7pm on Amazing Radio.

Initially I spotted it on the old Facebook mini-feed ages ago when Greg (of Greg and Burtt) was plugging his show. Later I saw an advert on Media UK calling for new presenters so sent in my demo.

Before we plucked you from relative obscurity and plonked you on the Amazing airwaves, what did you do?

After a load of work experience and some presenting in Jersey on Channel 103 in the six months after graduating from the University of Birmingham with an English and Drama degree, I ended up working in the online team at Xfm, writing news articles and interviewing bands.

After XFM I got a lucky break and went to BBC 6 Music, where for the past two and a bit years I’ve developed skills as a music reporter. My work there has involved meeting some of my absolute heroes, covering more festivals and gigs than I can remember, including Glastonbury and Coachella in the US, writing and reading music news bulletins live on the 6 airwaves, making packages, podcasts and writing articles for the website and BBC Entertainment online. It was a blast and I still freelance there, but after doing the Breakfast Show on Brighton Festival Radio earlier this year, I decided I wanted to do more presenting.

Tell us about your show please!

It’s nice and early, between 7-10am, to accompany your tea and toast to in the morning. It’s all about the music with some light-hearted banter and music-related topical chat.  Any funny stories that I hear on my travels will no doubt make an appearance too.  Each week we feature an artist from amazingtunes.com get them on, as well as a comedian.  We also highlight a gig each day that we think you should go to and pick a track of the week, which we get to play five times in a row… Result.

Georgie Rogers: Making breakfast beautiful!

Why should we listen?

Simple; because it’s all new music and you’ll be surprised at how much is fabulous.

Aside from your own fabulous show, have you got any other favourite Amazing Radio shows?

Tough one as I’m the ‘new girl’ and I think they’re all great, so want to say everyone!

As you might tell from Amazing Breakfast and my glee at getting to play big tunes by Absorb Vs Sequel and Moscow Youth Cult at 8.30 in the morning every now and then, I’m a big fan of dance music, so Mark Ryan’s Amazing Beats Friday night marathon is right up my street.

Also, I totally dig the Are You More Rock and Roll than Kevin Read? feature on Kyle Wilkinson’s Afternoon Show with the lovely Producer Frankie, as Kevin Read is one of the funniest men in the north. Fact.

Finally, what makes Amazing so, well, amazing!?

There’s nothing else on the radio that is solely dedicated, 24 hours a day, to nurturing emerging talent.  The UK is blessed with a fruitful music scene and it’s up to showcase all the smashing acts before they get snapped up by the big boys.

You can hear the wonderful spoken words of Georgie Rogers between 7 and 10 every weekday morning on Amazing Breakfast.

Once again, Jim Gellatly will be keeping Trevor Dann’s seat warm on It’s Amazing this Sunday on Amazing Radio.
