2011 Predictions: Frankie Ward

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Here at Amazing Radio we’re always looking to find you brand new and emerging talent to grace your ears and our airwaves.

Over the next couple of weeks the Amazing team will be revealing who they think you’ll be hearing more of throughout 2011. Today the new music tips come from Amazing Folk Roots Show presenter Frankie Ward.

Frankie’s first ‘one to watch’ is Sunderland based solo artist Martin Longstaff, who performs under the name of The Lake Poets:

“The music from The Lake Poets provides everything you could ever want from an acoustic musician. The songs are laden with fabulous lyrics, subtle finger plucked guitar melodies and tender vocals. Martin’s quickly starting to gain a fan base outside of the North East so I predict a tour and big opportunities for him soon. Watch his space.”

Frankie’s second pick for 2011 greatness is ‘licensed London Underground busker’ Beck Lanehart:

“I was absolutely blown away when I first heard Beck Lanehart and her song ‘The Eversholt Trees‘. Her voice is stunning in its purity and her vocal technique is impeccable. This might seem irrelevant to most, but for me hearing a voice with such a fantastic natural tone is extremely exciting.  I really hope she gets the chance to release a full LP soon – I’ll be at the front of the queue when she does.”

Could 2011 be the year of the ‘impeccable vocal technique’, we wonder?

Hear Frankie Ward present the Amazing Folk Roots Show tonight from 7pm on Amazing Radio.

The Amazing Sessions: Lesley Roley

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Monday the 25th October saw the arrival of Newcastle based songstress Lesley Roley at Blank Studios, ready to record the next chapter of  The Amazing Sessions.

In a change of pace to our usually hectic band filled days, Lesley brought only an acoustic guitar with her for company, creating an entirely relaxed atmosphere somewhat fitting for what turned out to be the coldest morning of the year! The frost didn’t last too long though, some honey filled hot drinks and a thorough set up of numerous expertly placed microphones courtesy of studio engineer Sam Grant, meant that we were all set to record.

Performing stripped down versions of four tracks in total, it didn’t take long to see why Ms. Roley has been so popular both on Amazing Radio and amazingtunes.com. Her voice is just lovely – very sweet but with a sense of melancholy that grabs your attention and holds it right up until the final note.

Audience favourite Mr. Sad sounded great as always but it was the two tracks from the newly released EP Way We Are that will no doubt gain the most attention. You can hear the exclusive first play of these live versions by tuning into Amazing Live with Rich Brant from 1pm today. The remaining tracks will be played on the Amazing Folk Roots Show with Frankie Ward from 7pm this Sunday.

Tracks with a full band backing from Lesley’s new EP are available to buy via her amazingtunes.com profile, so if you’d like to hear Lesley performing her songs to the fullest, we recommend that you take a listen! Plus, don’t forget to keep an eye out for her upcoming gigs in support of the new release.

Check out Lesley Roley in The Amazing Sessions alongside previous guest acts here, and don’t forget to tune into Amazing Radio from 1pm today to hear Lesley chatting to Amazing Live host Rich Brant.

The Region of the Week round up

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Every week The Afternoon Show takes on the mission of finding out more about a regional music scene. This week they’ve been getting to know the music scene of the UK’s Second City, Birmingham.

Hi everyone, Producer Frankie here!

All this week we’ve been exploring Birmingham and we have a few people to thank for helping us on our way!

We’ve talked making music in Birmingham with Tom Peel (Monday) and The Black and Red‘s Ash Sheehan (Wednesday) as well as hearing tracks from the likes of ska pop lovers Mr Shankly and indie pop’s future superstars Tantrums.

The boys (and girl) of Tantrums

The boys (and girl) of Tantrums

On Thursday we heard from one of Birmingham’s new music scene ambassadors, Claire Powell. Claire’s the president of the University of Birmingham’s brand new Live and Unsigned Music Society (LUMsoc) which is lobbying for students to actively seek out and enjoy local and national new music.

Today we’re absolutely thrilled to be talking to Jon Brookes. Jon’s a founding member of Britpop legends The Charlatans and has just released his 11th studio album with the band. We’ll be talking about how the Birmingham music scene has progressed, but also about the young Brummie act he manages, The Arcadian Kicks.

A big thanks to everyone who has helped us on our way this week – and Birmingham, we love you!

Tune into The Afternoon Show to hear presenter Kyle Wilkinson round up the Region of the Week in style, from 3pm today, on Amazing Radio.

Matchmaker

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Each week The Afternoon Show goes on a mission to set an Amazing Radio listener up with a new music match based on their three favourite acts. Being true romantics at heart, we call it Matchmaker.

This week we’re Matchmaking alternative rock fan Jason Clayton to a new music love. Jason got in touch via our Facebook group and told us that his three favourite acts are Pixies, Faith No More and Days of the New.

Producer Frankie hit the pages of amazingtunes.com in search of a perfect for match for Jason. After searching for artists in the alternative vein Frankie came across Leeds based independent musician James Owen Fender.

Producer Frankie chose The Cloud by James Owen Fender because of its ‘big tune’, describing it as ‘something that you’d expect from anthemic hit makers Faith No More.’ Although more accessible than the grungy sounding Days of the New, the track also features James’ distinctive Leeds accent, just as Days of the New singer Travis Meek makes a statement with his own transatlantic drawl.

Jason’s final favourite act, the much beloved Pixies also felt relevant to the Producer Frankie’s choice. Fender’s track feels inspired by the strong bass drum beats and electric guitar hooks one might find on a signature Pixies’ track such as Where is My Mind.

We hope you heart it Jason!

Hear Producer Frankie in Matchmaking action on The Afternoon Show, from 3pm today, on Amazing Radio.

The Region of the Week round up

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Every week The Afternoon Show takes on the mission of finding out more about a regional music scene. On occasion they are joined by a ‘local music expert’ who helps them delve even deeper into what makes their region so prolific.

Hi everyone, Producer Frankie at your service!

This week we’ve been exploring the intricacies of the Leicester music scene and very interesting it has been too!

On Tuesday we got the lowdown on the best places to see live music and who to check out from Dan Stansall of Leicestermusicscene.co.uk. Thursday brought along the opportunity to find out more about specific music events in Leicester as we spoke to John Helps of instrumental alternative act Maybeshewill. John’s one of the key organisers of White Noise Festival so he was more than happy to tell us about the kind of bands we can expect to see on future Leicester-based festival lineups.

The Screening

The Screening

We’ve also been lucky to have had a helping hand from some of the region’s best bands. On Wednesday we were given a musical tour by Moscow Youth Cult, and today we’ll be chatting to ‘Vampire Music’ moguls The Screening who are fresh from touring the UK with fellow amazingtunes.com act Charly Coombes and The New Breed.

Thanks to everyone for making us feel so welcome!

Tune into The Afternoon Show to hear presenter Kyle Wilkinson round up the Region of the Week in style, from 3pm today, on Amazing Radio.
